Tomasz Gop stapt op bij CI Games wegens meningsverschil over Lords of the Fallen 2

Tomasz Gop, producent van onder andere de eerste twee Witcher-games en Lords of the Fallen, stapt op bij CI Games. Deze studio werkt momenteel aan Lords of the Fallen 2. Gop kondigde op Facebook aan dat hij opstapt en op zoek is naar een nieuw project.

CI Games laat in een officiële reactie weten:

We’re grateful for his input, but we have different visions for further development of the series and Tomasz will not be a part of CI Games’ progress. We want to reach a wider audience for this game. That’s why we’re building a richer story. We’re aware that these aspects could’ve been better in first game, so the story is a big point of the sequel, along with robust fighting system. We want to bring something fresh to RPG games.

De breuk tussen Gop en CI lijkt overigens niet geheel vriendschappelijk, hoewel het bovenstaande dat wél enigszins doet vermoeden. In een e-mail aan Eurogamer gaf Gop het volgende te kennen:

I want to respect CI’s will to keep [the exact reasons for their parting] between me and them. I wanted all the best for Lords but there’s going to be someone else leading the project and we’ll see if it will make it more successful than I could. I made [up] my mind a couple of days ago, we just wanted to figure out the best communication for both sides.

Hoewel we op deze manier te horen krijgen dat Lords of the Fallen 2 zich meer zal richten op het verhaal, is de kans groot dat dit niet het enige is waarin het tweede deel zal verschillen van het eerste. Het eerste spel in de franchise werd namelijk (onder leiding van Tomasz Gop) ontwikkeld door Deck13 en ook die studio heeft gebroken met CI Games.

De tijd zal leren in welke richting de Lords of the Fallen-franchise zich gaat begeven. Het tweede deel is nog niet in productie, maar er is al “een relatief vergevorderde conceptvisie.” Die werd echter onder Gop uitgewerkt, dus de vraag is of (en in hoeverre) CI Games daar nog wat mee doet. Het zal hoe dan ook nog wel even duren voor we aan de slag kunnen met Lords of the Fallen 2.
