Dust 514 sluit zijn servers op 30 mei; nieuwe game in EVE-universum op komst

De free-to-play-game Dust 514 was geen lang leven beschoren. Het spel verscheen mei 2013 op de PlayStation 3, maar moet volgende maand zijn deuren al sluiten.

In een officiële verklaring laat CCP Games weten dat het werkt aan een nieuwe pc shooter die draait op de Unreal Engine 4. De studio wil zich daar nu volledig op focussen en gebruikt daarbij de kennis die het heeft opgedaan met Dust 514:

We are very proud of what we’ve learned and accomplished with DUST 514 on PlayStation 3 over the past three years and it is an honour to be a part of such a dedicated communit. We consider DUST 514 one of the best free-to-play offerings on the platform, but the years have caught up with us.

De geplande 1.3 update is tevens gecanceld. Je kunt Dust 514 tot 31 mei nog steeds spelen, maar het is niet langer mogelijk om met microtransacties spullen aan te schaffen in de PlayStation Store. Heb je nog Aurum op je account staan, dan kun je dit wel nog besteden.

De vrijgekomen mankracht gaat zich nu storten op een geëvolueerde versie van Project Legion, dat werd getoond tijdens het EVE Fanfest in 2014. Deze game draait op de Unreal Engine 4 en speelt zich af in het universum van New Eden:

CCP’s development team in Shanghai has been working on a prototype for a first-person shooter for PC with the goal of building a great FPS set in our sci-fi universe of New Eden (the universe in which EVE Online, DUST 514, EVE: Valkyrie, and Gunjack are set). Their experience is being utilized to build a new game from scratch using Unreal Engine 4 while harnessing all our learnings from DUST 514.

This is in many ways an evolution of Project Legion, the concept we announced at EVE Fanfest 2014, but without the limitations of technical debt and development paths we quickly discovered in that effort that could never serve as a future-proof technology base for a full production game.
