Prijsdaling PlayStation 3 dit jaar is onwaarschijnlijk

Sony Computer Entertainment zal geen prijsverlaging inzetten op haar PlayStation 3, zo denken diverse analisten in de game-industrie. Het Japanse bedrijf is al in prijs gedaald in het derde kwartaal van 2011, dus het is onwaarschijnlijk dat de PlayStation 3 weer goedkoper wordt. Sony zal geen slechte verkopen hebben, maar volgens IDC Research’s Lewis Ward moeten we niet vreemd opkijken als Sony als derde uit de feestdagen komt.

Sony dropped their console prices $50 in 3Q11 so I don’t expect another price cut this holiday season. I don’t think Sony will have terrible game sales results this holiday season but I also won’t be surprised if they come in third when it’s all said and done

Ook is de afweging een punt van nadenken. Hoeveel impact heeft het daadwerkelijk op de verkopen als de console weer in prijs daalt? Niet veel, aldus PJ McNealy van DWR Research. Sony is zich daarnaast aan het herstellen van tegenvallende cijfers, dus het bedrijf doet er slim aan bundels te gaan verkopen met de nieuwe PlayStation 3 ‘Super Slim’.

Sony is trying to minimize losses right now after posting terrible financial results in the past year. I think the solutions for them right now are more focused on a slim PS3 with bundles.

De focus op de bundels is slimmer dan een prijsdaling, met het oog op een mogelijke aankondiging van de PlayStation 4 volgend jaar. Als deze console namelijk wordt aangekondigd, is Sony haast wel verplicht de huidige spelcomputer voor minder aan te bieden.

If they cut the price now, they’ll just have to cut it again when they announce PS4. So maybe they are thinking ‘Let’s limp this through until the announcement’ and then they’ll do the next price cut similar to what Nintendo did with Wii in front of Wii U.
